Mystical Mt. Baker Elopement in the Rain

There’s something so magical about the way fog transforms a landscape, turning familiar scenes into something out of a fairytale. For Kat and Tom’s fall elopement in the North Cascades, Mother Nature delivered – wrapping their intimate celebration in a giant pillowy hug. The foggy weather created the most incredible atmosphere, with soft and romantic lighting all day long. As someone who spends countless days exploring these peaks, I’ve never seen the mountains quite as mystical as they were on this September day, when layers of fog danced around us like nature’s own wedding veil.

The elopement day began in the Hygge Hus treehouse, surrounded by towering trees. This is one of our favorite Airbnbs in the North Cascades because of its modern design and luxurious hot tub! Kat’s mom helped her into her sparkly wedding dress while Tom donned his boots and honeybee cuff links. Their first look took place in the yard among moss-draped trees and ferns. Tom’s face lit up with joy as Kat approached, the beads in her dress catching the light. The two squeezed hands and shared grins, so excited that their wedding day had finally arrived.

Leaving the cabin behind, we wound our way up the Mount Baker Highway, watching as the landscape transformed with each mile. The dense forest gradually gave way to sweeping views, and through breaks in the clouds, we caught glimpses of the mountain peaks above. The North Cascades welcomed us with crispy mountain air as we arrived at Kat and Tom’s ceremony spot. Kat’s dad officiated a sweet ceremony that brought lots of laughter as the two newlyweds exchanged rings among their friends and family. After everything was sealed with a kiss, we made our way to the nearby picnic area to sign the marriage license and make it official! The celebration that followed was beautifully simple. Champagne corks popped while Kat and Tom cut into their wedding cake and snacked on charcuterie. As everyone toasted the newlyweds, the fog began to roll in, bringing us from summer into fall.

After saying goodbye to their family and friends, it was time to explore! Kat and Tom grabbed their raincoats and hiking packs, decorated with wooden “Just Married” signs. We meandered along the rugged mountain path, where granite cliffs came in and out of view in the swirling fog. Each turn in the trail revealed another stunning vista – alpine lakes in deep blues and teals, rocky outcroppings with waterfalls, and little peeks of autumn color dotting the landscape. We climbed up above a secluded alpine lake, where Kat and Tom exchanged private vows with raindrops pattering around them. The fog that had been building all day finally enveloped us completely, creating an ethereal backdrop for the last few photos of the day. As darkness settled in, we headed back up to the cars with lanterns glowing softly in the mist – a fantastical end to another perfect elopement day in the North Cascades!
